Evolution of the Hollyburn Ski Camp: Part 1 - The Lodge
Back

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE HOLLYBURN LODGE The lodge was constructed in 1926 from lumber salvaged from the abandoned Nasmyth mill. The building was 75 feet wide and 25 feet wide. Logs provided a basic foundation. The lodge had board and batten cladding and a cedar shake roof. Originally the lodge was accessed through a 'main' door on the east side of the building. There was also a back door on the west side and a side door on the south side. Inside the lodge there was a kitchen stove and a fireplace. A covered porch was added to the main (front) entrance in 1928. By March, 1934, a back room had been built on the east side of the building. Entry to the new room was through the 'old' back door. Anecdotal information indicates the back room was initially used as a boys’ dorm. A girls’ dorm was located upstairs in a small room at the south end of the attic. The rest of the attic was used for storing ski equipment. The girls’ dorm and the storage were reached via a set of stairs built alongside the interior east wall at the south end of the building. In the early 1940’s, the Swedes moved the kitchen into the back room. The space that had formerly been used as a kitchen now became the boy’s dorm. An east-west wall built across the 25 foot width of the lodge separated the boys’ dorm from the main room. Basic washroom facilities were provided in a small building south of the ski lodge. After the Burfields purchased the lodge in 1946, they built two large log cabins on either side of the washroom. These became the 'new' boys' and girls' dorms. The Burfields were then able to move the kitchen facilities into the space formerly occupied by the boys’ dorm. From time to time, members of the Burfield family lived upstairs in what had been the girls’ dorm. They continued to use the north end of the attic as a storage space. A 1977 photo indicates that Fred Burfield had replaced some of the shakes on the lodge roof with sheets of tin. By the early 1980’s, the entire roof was made from tin. After Cypress Bowl Recreations Ltd. purchased all the ski facilities in Cypress Provincial Park in 1985, an entrance was added to the north end of the building and is now the main entrance to the lodge during the ski season. The former main entrance on the east side is a designated emergency exit.
