In the Spring of 1932, West Vancouver resident Roland D. Brewis conceived the idea of building a ski campon the shores of West Lake. He discussed his plans with Edward Mahon, the owner of the property and a well-known North Vancouver pioneer. (Mahon Park and Mahon Avenue are named after him.) Having built a cabin near Lost Lake years before, Mr. Mahon admired the vision and initiative of R.D. Brewis and agreed to finance the venture. In late September, 1932, R. D. Brewis, F. Barr, and three Finlanders began to build the lski camp. This small group endured harsh working and living conditions including a record 7m snowfall but still managed to complete the main ski camp building before Spring. The West Lake Ski Camp was officially opened on March 18th, 1933. During the next five years, thousands of Lower Mainland residents visited the ski camp many hiking up a trail built by R.D. Brewis which started at the top of 15th Street in West Vancouver. This trail could also be accessed via Eyremont Drive in the yet to be developed British Pacific Properties. Summer hikers, including the elderly ski camp financier and owner Edward Mahon and Hollyburn skiing celebrities Daisy Bourdon and Gus Johnson, stopped at the ski campfor a rest and refreshment. Some, like Florence Brewis and her son Doug, explored West Lake in a small dugout canoe. In the late fall or early winter, when conditions permitted, skaters flew over the ice, at times serenaded by a hardy group of musicians. A new fall of snow was sure to attract skiers. Overnight visitors could look forward to a warm, comforting fire and spring beds with mattresses, blankets and flannelette sheets after a long day on the slopes. For skiers, there were many incentives to come to West Lake; for ski jumpers like Nordal Kaldahl, there was one compelling reason – the West Lake jump, known as the big hill on Hollyburn. Designed by Finn Fladmark and built by Hollyburn Pacific Ski Club members Mickey Pogue and Irish Beaumont, the West Lake jump was the most challenging of all the jumps built on Hollyburn. With a grade of 38 percent and approximately 275 feet in length, some expert ski jumpers rated it as second only to the championship hill in Revelstoke. The “big hill” at West Lake was used until the spring of 1938. After Edward Mahon passed away in March, 1937, Mrs. Mahon decided to sell the West Lake property to the District of West Vancouver Municipality which wanted to add the area around the lake to its protected watershed lands. The ski camp and the ski jump trestle were dismantled by Fred and Harry Jones. By 1939, the site was deserted, except for occasional groups of hikers that passed by on their way to the plateau lakes or Hollyburn Peak.
