Westlake Lodge
Back

After Edward Mahon, the owner of West Lake Lodge, died in 1937, his property around West Lake was sold to the Municipality of West Vancouver which had been looking for ways to increase its water supply. (Anticipating the opening of the Lions Gate bridge, hundreds people were buying lots and building new homes in the North Shore community.) R. D. Brewis, who had arranged the sale of the watershed lands, was given two 80 acre blocks of land that sloped south and away from Brothers Creek. Fred and Harry Jones, who owned the Bicycle Shop in West Vancouver, then purchased from Brewis ten acres of this land which was on the north border of the block closest to the original West Lake site. The Jones brothers had worked at West Lake Lodge and wanted to build a new ski lodge on Hollyburn. Assisted by their father, Fred and Harry dismantled West Lake Lodge and skidded whatever logs they could use down to their proposed building site. During the next three years they built two log cabins. The largest, 70 by 30 feet and two storeys high, became known as Westlake Ski Lodge. Along with their parents and young sister, the Jones brothers operated the lodge as a family for several years. In 1949, they sold Westlake Ski Lodge to Don Lee who had been running the Forks store. When Lee got into some financial difficulties, Norm Deacon purchased the lodge from him in May, 1952. Deacon had a cabin on Hollyburn and was the owner/operator of the Suicide, Graveyard, West Lake, and Mobraaten rope tows. He ran Westlake Lodge for the next twenty years, a memorable era on the mountain. Hollyburners remember the annual Deacon Downhill ski competition and lively Saturday night dances at the lodge. Deacon sold Westlake Lodge to Ron Caverly in 1972, shortly before the opening of the Cypress Bowl highway. The lodge was renamed Cypress Park Resort. Caverly’s improvements to the lodge included a full-course dining room and more luxurious overnight accommodation. Unfortunately, these improvements did not attract new business. Caverly eventually sold Cypress Park Resort to the McCann family in 1985. On October 20, 1986, the lodge burned to the ground after sparks from a chimney landed on the roof. Today there is talk that a recreational facility for young people may be built on the site.
